Chiediamo alla Commissione Europea e al Governo italiano, di pronunciarsi subito, in modo chiaro e definitivo, sulla moratoria temporanea dei brevetti, proposta da India e Sudafrica già da ottobre scorso, sottoscritta da un ampio e articolato movimento in Europa e nel mondo e sulla quale ha fatto un’importante apertura il presidente americano Joe Biden: occorre urgentemente uscire dal rimpallo di affermazioni, negazioni, contrapposizioni di questi giorni. Chiediamo un “sì” netto e deciso perché in gioco ci sono troppe vite umane” Ha dichiarato il Comitato Italiano della Campagna Europea -Right2Cure #NoprofitOnPandemic

Le dichiarazioni del Presidente del Consiglio Mario Draghi ad Oporto, di plauso a Biden, erano parse un segnale positivo per il Comitato, che gli aveva rivolto un appello in tale direzione il 19 aprile senza aver mai ricevuto alcuna risposta, ma a queste non sono seguiti atti concreti, bensì un susseguirsi di argomentazioni di fonte governativa contraddittorie e ambigue. Non si può continuare così, occorre una ferma assunzione di responsabilità sia sulle decisioni che il Governo italiano può assumere in autonomia, sia sulle scelte della Commissione Europea, sulla quale il nostro Governo può esercitare, insieme ad altri Paesi, una forte e pubblica pressione.

Non ci sono altre strade, oltre la moratoria: la gestione della produzione e distribuzione dei vaccini da parte delle aziende farmaceutiche proprietarie dei brevetti, ha dimostrato di essere ampiamente fallimentare e incapace di dare risposte ai due terzi dell’umanità. La sospensione dei brevetti prevista dai trattati sulla proprietà intellettuale in casi di grave emergenza, e la condivisione del know-how, consentiranno ad aziende pubbliche e private, con le tecnologie adeguate, la produzione di vaccini, senza dipendere dalle decisioni delle aziende titolari dei brevetti. Con i soldi risparmiati dalla riduzione dei costi dei vaccini i governi potranno finanziare la riconversione di altre aziende, aumentando il numero di quelle che possono produrre i vaccini.
