Montelfo è un paese magico in cui Stefano Benni si è sbizzarrito a creare una grande quantità di personaggi, travolti da situazioni ironiche e paradossali. Stiamo parlando di Pane e Tempesta, un libro edito da Feltrinelli, nella collana “I narratori”, nel 2009. Con irriverente comicità Benni ci riporta in uno di quei paesi d’altri tempi, dove tutti si conoscono e condividono tutto. Gli abitanti di Montelfo vedono il loro futuro minacciato da una crescente speculazione edilizia che vorrebbe impossessarsi della zona, per potervi creare un centro commerciale. Il nonno Stregone è il “deus ex machina” del gruppo, colui che detiene il più grande numero di storie antiche da narrare. I nomi sono suggestivi e significativi. C’è infatti Ispido Manidoro, che può riparare tutto e all’occasione anche bloccare gli ingranaggi delle ruspe che avanzano nel bosco; l’oste Trincone; Trincone Toro (quest’ultimo potete immaginare il perché); i cuochi Sofronia e Rasputin; la memoria storica del paese, Archimede detto Archivio; la parrucchiera Frida Fon; lo gnomo Kinotto; Simona Bellosguardo; gli adolescenti innamorati Alice e Piombino. Ma anche personaggi inquietanti, come la vecchia Mannara, sempre vestita di nero che raccoglie i cani randagi; oppure personaggi negativi come il sindaco Velluti, e il ricco Sibilio Settecanal, che tramano alle spalle dei cittadini. E ancora, la Gina Saltasù, Culobia giocatrice fortunata, Maria Sandokan, Giango e i fratelli Sgomberati.
Lo scopo comune è quello di salvare il mitico Bar Sport, luogo di incontro dei paesani, fin dai tempi antichi. Il libro è un insieme di racconti evocativi; episodi di saggezza popolare, comici e commoventi al tempo stesso. L’umanità appare sempre più in balìa delle lusinghe fatte dal dio denaro, l’uomo è avido e pretende. Ma rimane una memoria storica, tratta da esperienze di vita che si tramandano di generazione in generazione, che serve a conservare la speranza. E quando giungono i tempi duri, chi è abituato a mangiare “pane e tempesta”, come gli uomini della vecchia generazione, non ha nulla da temere.
